Greenhouse gases and their environmental impact

Greenhouse gases (GHGs) are those present in the Earth's atmosphere that have the ability to trap infrared rays. These infrared rays come from sunlight that is reflected off the Earth's surface.

Because they are opaque, GHGs trap thermal energy near the Earth's surface instead of reflecting it back into space; this is why they warm the lower atmosphere.

All human activity generates greenhouse gases. Even breathing produces CO2, which, after water vapor, is the second most abundant naturally occurring GHG.

Regarding water vapor, since water is a natural compound that cycles through the environment, human activity does not cause significant atmospheric disruption. However, carbon dioxide emissions are responsible for 65% of the additional greenhouse effect caused by humans.

The Climate Act is a collective of small French businesses and startups committed to reducing their carbon footprint throughout 2021.

How do we know how much CO2 we produce?

To take action for our environment, we must first understand Octopush's position as a company. To that end, the first task under our Climate Act action plan is to calculate our carbon footprint by the end of 2021.

We have commissioned Sami, a provider specializing in carbon footprint assessments, to analyze all activities within our company and those of our employees. Everything is categorized into three scopes.

Scope 1:

Activities within the Octopush perimeter. For the manufacturing of our products or the provision of our services, do we use systems or equipment that directly generate carbon dioxide?

Scope 2:

Activities that are outside the Octopush perimeter but still generate CO2. Their production is a source of greenhouse gas emissions.

For example, what is the source of the electricity we use in our workplace?

Scope 3:

Any other emissions related to the company, such as goods and service providers, logistics, waste treatment, etc.

Our transparent carbon footprint

By sharing our findings with all companies that are part of the Climate Act, Octopush will be able to execute collective actions to reduce carbon dioxide emissions or, ideally, achieve carbon neutrality.

This does not mean reducing our carbon emissions to zero, but rather reaching a balance between our carbon footprint and the methods we follow to counteract those emissions.

Climate Act is a voluntary movement, but its goal is to become the model that inspires current legislation to address global warming. The aim is to implement legislation that requires companies to execute a plan to curb GHG generation, regardless of the number of employees.

Actions to save the environment

Carbon footprint offsetting involves balancing our carbon emission quota through actions that ensure a reduction in greenhouse gases. This is primarily done in two ways:

Participating in emission avoidance projects

To avoid carbon accumulation in the atmosphere, there is no better way than not generating it at all. Measures such as implementing renewable energy methods or saving on gas usage are ideal.

Supporting carbon sequestration projects

The most obvious path for this is reforestation, but it is equally possible to capture atmospheric carbon by encouraging the growth of phytoplankton in the oceans or by creating underground wells that store biological waste that would otherwise emit CO2 during decomposition.

Small acts of goodwill drive major changes toward a true ecological transition.
